Sedation Dentistry
Don't Put Off Dental Treatment Sedation Can Keep You Comfortable
Our Ridgewood dentists understand that many patients put off dental treatment due to phobias and poor experiences in the past. We can use sedation dentistry to keep patients relaxed throughout their treatments and allow our dentists to provide you with optimal care. We offer sedation dentistry to patients who:
- Have sensitive gums or teeth
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Require extensive dental work
- Have moderate-to-severe dental anxiety
- Do not respond well to local anesthesia
- Have trouble sitting still for long periods
- Want additional comfort as they undergo treatment
The Dangers of Avoiding the Dentist
Skipping your biannual professional cleanings and exams increases your risk of developing infections and decay. When left untreated, these conditions can cause teeth to loosen or fall out entirely. As a result, bite patterns can change, which can lead to other concerns such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). In addition, discomfort from extensive decay and a misaligned bite can be considerable. Our dentists can make your visits more enjoyable.

"I have had a lifelong fear of the dentist and really neglected to have yearly checkups. That coupled with just inheriting bad teeth bought me to where I am now... After extensive research on local dentists specializing in Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, I found RDA. I am about halfway through my treatment, but from the minute I first walked into the office, I knew I made the right decision... I still have more work to be done, but in the meantime I Iook forward to all my appointments and am not afraid at all. I cannot wait for my new smile." Nicole Vazquez

Your Sedation Dentistry Options
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, often known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask that you wear over your nose. Patients can still speak, answer questions, and follow instructions while under the effects of laughing gas. Nitrous oxide provides continuous medication throughout treatment but wears off relatively quickly, so patients can drive themselves home after treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
With oral conscious sedation, you are prescribed an oral sedative, usually in pill form, to take before your appointment. This form of sedation will put you in a deep state of relaxation and you may even fall asleep during your procedure. Because this form of sedation may make you groggy for a few hours, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation puts patients in a deep state of relaxation within minutes. While under IV sedation, patients can respond to questions from their dentist, although they will have little to no memory of their dental visit. Unlike oral conscious sedation, IV sedation can be adjusted throughout treatment to maintain a consistent level of relaxation. This type of sedation takes longer to wear off, so you should arrange for someone to drive you home after treatment.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia puts you in an unconscious state, so you don't feel any pain or sensations during your dentistry procedure. This form of sedation is typically only used for more complex or invasive procedures. Patients undergoing general anesthesia should have someone drive them home after the procedure and prepare to rest for the remainder of the day.
"I had numerous cavities when I first came to see Dr. Samani after neglecting to go to the dentist for over 10 years. Never once did he make me feel embarrassed or nervous about the amount of work I would need to have done. He’s extremely kind, professional, and knowledgeable and immediately makes you feel like your in good hands. After every visit I would leave thinking to myself “wow, that was so easy”... As someone who went years being non compliant because of fear or pain and overall “dental anxiety” I now attend my visits like clockwork." Jennifer Balzano
